From: Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913)

Sur·bed v. t. [imp. & p. p. Surbedded; p. pr. & vb. n. Surbedding.]  To set edgewise, as a stone; that is, to set it in a position different from that which it had in the quarry.
It . . . has something of a grain parallel with the horizon, and therefore should not be surbedded.   --Gilbert White.
